- RARE ANCESTRAL PUEBLOAN STONE AXE HEAD,
RARE ANCESTRAL PUEBLOAN STONE AXE HEAD, EX MUSEUMNative American, Southwestern United States, southern Colorado, Ancestral Puebloan, (Anasazi), Pueblo I to Pueblo III period, ca. 750 to 1300 CE. This is a hand-pecked and polished stone axe or hammer head, with a pair of side notches for hafting. The head is divided into separate heads by the large notches opposite each other along the periphery - one notch is slightly larger than the other - and looking closely it has a slightly raised central ridge. These notches facilitated hafting to a pole with a cord, or directly to a branch that was still green and pliable. One head is clearly the axe blade - the tip is sharpened to a cutting edge. The butt end is thicker and rounded, ideal for use as a hammer or club. Size: 5.5" L x 3.25" W (14 cm x 8.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, purchased in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum from 1962 to 1970, catalog no. 8562; ex-Bill Mitchell collection Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958 to 1962

- FINE TAINO STONE AXE W/ ZEMI FACEPre-Columbian,
FINE TAINO STONE AXE W/ ZEMI FACEPre-Columbian, Caribbean, Dominican Republic, Taino, ca. 15th century CE. This is an amazing and fine polished stone effigy axe featuring an abstract zoomorphic or anthropomorphic zemi figure as the grip. The petaloid bifacial shape is sharpened around the periphery, ending just before the slightly protruding ears of the zemi. The large eyes are shallow-carved concentric discs, creating an intense gaze and sunken sockets. The flared nostrils are also cadaverous, as if the nose as shrunken away to just cavities, with a square jawline and simple mouth groove. Zemis, or ancestral deity spirits, were revered by Taino culture - this figure could protect while hafted or held as a ceremonial axe head to serve as ritualistic offerings or signifiers of status. Size: 6" L x 3" W (15.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
Taino art is comprised of many cult objects associated with the worship of "zemis." The term zemi refers to deities, ancestors, or earth spirits. Zemis like this example are believed to be inhabited by powerful spirits. Owners of zemi figures traditionally honored them with offerings of food or precious gifts. Each zemi had its own identity and name, personality, and powers. These intriguing figures were also used for stands, reliquaries, and personal adornment, with many serving as implements in ceremonies involving a vegetal entheogen known as cohoba - a hallucinogenic powder or paste that was inhaled through snuff tubes.
This piece was from a pre-1970 Taino collection, and many of the pieces in the collection were on public display at the Museum of Native American History in Bentonville Arkansas from November 2016 to March 2019. Most of the artifacts came from Wilfred Belmar; born in the Dominican Republic, he began finding and collecting artefacts as a child through the 1930s and 1940s. This collection has been vetted by Dr. William F. Keegan, chairman and curator of the Anthropology Department of Natural History at the Florida Museum of Natural History, Associate Director for Research and Collections, professor of Anthropology and Curator of Latin American Studies at the University of Florida, and author of "Talking Taino" published 2008 and "The Oxford Handbook of Caribbean Archaeology" published in 2013. In 2015 he studied this collection and was quite impressed with the quality of the pieces. The pieces were also studied by Dr. John F. Scott, Professor Emeritus, Professor of Art History at the University of Florida and publisher of the textbooks: "Latin American Art: Ancient and Modern," "The Art of the Taino of the Dominican Republic" in 1985, and the 1970 Metropolitan Museum of Art catalog "Before Cortes."

- NATIVE AMERICAN WOODLANDS STONE AXE
NATIVE AMERICAN WOODLANDS STONE AXE HEAD - FULL GROOVENative American, Midwestern United States, Michigan, Farwell, Eastern Woodland, Archaic Period, ca. 5000 BCE (7000 BP). A hefty stone axe head that is hand-pecked from a mottled gray stone. Across one end is a full groove that encircles the entire circumference of the axe head, which not only gave the implement its name - "full groove stone axe" - but also allowed it to be attached to a wooden handle with a cord. The head is elongated with a rounded butt end and a thick body that tapers to a straight cutting edge. This is a substantial tool, great for a variety of tasks, such as chopping wood. Size: 7.5" L x 4.5" W (19 cm x 11.4 cm)

- TAIRONA GREENSTONE AXE HEADPre-Columbian,
TAIRONA GREENSTONE AXE HEADPre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A nice example of a sweeping axe head that is hand-carved from mottled grass green stone with beautiful dark gray, beige, and cream veining. The tool features a crescent-shaped blade head, a sturdy, rectangular neck, and a thick handle with a biconically drilled suspension hole. Axe heads like this example were perhaps carved for ritualistic or ceremonial purposes - rather than for utilitarian use - and was perhaps deposited into a grave with a deceased individual. Size: 3" L x 6.125" H (7.6 cm x 15.6 cm)

- GUERRERO MEZCALA GREENSTONE TYPE M-22
GUERRERO MEZCALA GREENSTONE TYPE M-22 AXE GOD FIGUREPre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. A large and pretty example of a hand-carved greenstone axe god of the Type M-22 that presents with abstract anthropomorphic features. The stylized figure stands with delineated, string-cut legs and holds both arms atop the slightly bulging stomach. A rounded chest with angular shoulders and a broad neck supports the oversized, bulbous head. The minimalist visage exhibits string-cut grooves denoting the eyes and brows, nasolabial folds, and mouth. The top of the head has clefts to indicate a headdress or coiffure, and two slight tabs below the bulging forehead add the appearance of ears. The stone is a smooth mottled green-gray hue with brown speckles and beige mineral deposits. Size: 5.25" L x 2" W (13.3 cm x 5.1 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
This particular Mezcala axe god exhibits features characteristic of M-22/M-24 Mezcala figures. The Mezcala style underwent a gradual evolutionary process, and M-22/M-24 were among the most advanced of the Mezcala types. The Mezcala sculptors brilliantly used string-saw technology to differentiate facial features and limbs. The ancient artisans of this region were particularly adept at reducing the human body to eloquent, minimalist forms via this string cut technique. The result ironically appeals to a modernist taste for minimalism. Mezcala sculptural works are equally appealing for the inherent beauty of the stone selected by the ancients

- ARCHAIC NATIVE AMERICAN 3/4 GROOVE STONE
ARCHAIC NATIVE AMERICAN 3/4 GROOVE STONE AXE HEAD**First Time At Auction**
Native American, Midwestern to Eastern United States, Eastern Woodland, Archaic to Woodland period, ca. 5000 BCE to 1000 CE. A hefty stone axe or hammer head that is hand-pecked from a dark gray hardstone. A groove is cut around three quarters of the circumference of the tool, and as the name suggests, this is therefore designated as 3/4 axe head. These grooves facilitated hafting the stones onto a wooden pole or handle for greater leverage with fibrous twine or leather straps. The rounded heads were for pounding and the blade end was ideal for shaping or cutting wood or softer stones. Size: 6.5" L x 2" W x 2.5" H (16.5 cm x 5.1 cm x 6.4 cm)
